20M timing belt for heavy-duty industrial power transmission in mining, cement, steel and paper machine drives

What Is an HTD 20M Synchronous Belt?

The HTD 20M synchronous belt (also known as the HTD 20M timing belt) is the largest-pitch, highest-load-capacity member of the HTD (High Torque Drive) curvilinear tooth belt family. With a 20 mm tooth pitch, a deep curvilinear tooth profile and a heavy-grade composite construction, it is engineered for the most demanding heavy-duty industrial power transmission applications.

Unlike trapezoidal-tooth timing belts, the rounded HTD 20M tooth profile ensures smooth meshing, uniform stress distribution and significantly higher torque capacity. The belt delivers up to 98% transmission efficiency, supports maximum linear speeds of up to 20 m/s and transmits up to approximately 600 HP, making it the preferred choice for high-torque, low-to-medium speed drives in heavy industry.

For smaller-pitch HTD profiles suited to lighter loads, see our HTD 14M Timing Belt product lines.

Materials & Construction

Every HTD 20M synchronous belt is built with a three-layer composite structure using premium, industry-grade materials for long service life and reliable performance under extreme loads.

Layer	Material	Function
Tensile Cords (Backbone)	High-strength fibreglass cord; aramid cord optional	Exceptional tensile strength, minimal elongation and outstanding length stability under sustained heavy loads.
Belt Body	Premium chloroprene rubber (CR)	Excellent resistance to heat, oil, ozone and flex fatigue; retains flexibility and structural integrity over a wide temperature range.
Tooth Facing	Wear-resistant nylon fabric bonded to the tooth surface	Reduces friction and tooth wear, lowers running noise and extends belt service life under high load.

Handling & Storage Notes

Handle the belt with care during installation; avoid kinking, twisting or mechanically damaging it.
Store belts in a cool, dry place away from heat sources; avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can crack the rubber and damage the cords.
Keep belts away from chemicals (especially strong acids and alkalis), oil and water during storage, installation and operation.
Never bend the belt below the minimum recommended pulley diameter, and never use non-professional tools to pry it onto a pulley.

Key Advantages

1. Exceptional Load CapacityThe 20 mm pitch and deep curvilinear tooth design let the HTD 20M transmit far higher torque than smaller-pitch HTD belts (3M, 5M, 8M, 14M).

2. High Transmission EfficiencyPrecision curvilinear tooth meshing delivers up to 98% efficiency, reducing energy loss and operating cost versus V-belt or chain drives.

3. Precise SynchronisationFibreglass tensile cords provide exceptional length stability with near-zero elongation, ensuring accurate speed ratios and backlash-free transmission.

4. Low Noise & Smooth OperationThe rounded HTD tooth profile ensures progressive, smooth tooth engagement, giving lower noise and reduced vibration than trapezoidal belts.

5. Excellent DurabilityA premium chloroprene rubber body with nylon-faced teeth resists wear, flex fatigue, heat, oil and ozone, even in harsh industrial environments.

6. Maintenance-Free OperationNo lubrication is required and no stretching or re-tensioning is needed under normal operating conditions, cutting downtime and cost.

7. Wide CompatibilityFully interchangeable with standard HTD 20M pulleys and sheaves from all major manufacturers.

All 20M synchronous belts are manufactured to the ISO 13050 standard for synchronous belt drives (20M profile), ensuring full dimensional interchangeability with equivalent-profile 20M belts from other mainstream international manufacturers.

Belt Naming Convention

HTD 20M belts follow the designation format: [Pitch Length] – [Pitch Code] – [Belt Width]. For example, 4200-20M-115 indicates a belt with a 4200 mm pitch line length, a 20M tooth profile (20 mm pitch) and a 115 mm belt width. Where the width is omitted the designation reads 4200-20M.

Applications

The HTD 20M synchronous belt is designed for heavy-duty industrial power transmission where high torque, precise synchronisation and long service life are critical:

Mining & Quarrying: conveyor systems, crushers, ball mills and aggregate processing equipment.
Cement & Steel Industry: rotary kiln drives, roller presses, bucket elevators and heavy material handling.
Paper & Printing: large paper machine drives, printing press main drives and calender rolls.
Textile Machinery: heavy loom drives, spinning frames and fabric processing lines.
Power Generation: fan and pump drives, and auxiliary power transmission in thermal and hydroelectric plants.
Heavy Manufacturing: machine tool main drives, forging equipment and large compressor drives.
Construction Equipment: concrete mixers, hoists and heavy construction machinery drives.
Industrial HVAC: large fans, blowers and air-handling systems.
Long-Span Conveyors: bulk material handling over long distances.
Commercial Laundry: industrial washers and dryers.
Mining Equipment: heavy extraction and processing machinery.

Installation & Maintenance

Proper installation and maintenance are essential to achieve maximum belt life and performance:

Pulley Alignment: ensure driving and driven pulleys are precisely aligned (parallel shafts, axially aligned grooves). Misalignment causes uneven tooth wear and edge fraying.
Centre Distance Adjustment: always reduce centre distance before installing the belt; never force or pry the belt over pulley flanges, which damages the tensile cords.
Tensioning: set initial tension per manufacturer recommendations. Over-tensioning causes bearing load and cord fatigue; under-tensioning causes tooth jumping.
Pre-Run Check: after installation and initial tensioning, run the drive at low speed for a few minutes, then stop and recheck tension before full load.
Regular Inspection: check belts periodically for cracked teeth, excessive tooth wear, frayed edges, cord damage or oil contamination, and replace worn belts promptly.
Pulley Inspection: check pulley grooves for wear, damage or rust; worn pulleys accelerate belt wear and cause meshing problems.
Environmental Protection: keep belts away from prolonged oil, grease, chemical and sunlight exposure, and ensure drive guards allow adequate ventilation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an HTD 20M timing belt?

The HTD 20M (High Torque Drive) timing belt is the largest-pitch member of the curvilinear-tooth synchronous belt family. It uses a 20 mm tooth pitch, an 8.4 mm tooth height and a 13.2 mm belt thickness, and is engineered for extreme heavy-duty industrial power transmission where high torque, precise synchronisation and long service life are critical.

What is the difference between HTD 20M and trapezoidal-tooth timing belts?

HTD 20M belts use a rounded curvilinear tooth with a full-radius root, so load is distributed evenly across the tooth. Compared with trapezoidal profiles such as XH and XXH, this gives higher torque capacity, smoother and quieter meshing, better resistance to tooth jump and longer service life under heavy loads.

How do I read a 20M belt model number such as 4200-20M-115?

The designation follows pitch length – pitch code – belt width. So 4200-20M-115 means a 4200 mm pitch line length, an HTD 20M profile with a 20 mm pitch, and a 115 mm belt width. Where the width is omitted, the model reads 4200-20M.

What standard lengths and widths are available?

We stock 24 standard pitch lengths from 1160 mm to 6560 mm in widths of 100, 115, 150, 170, 230, 290 and 340 mm. Custom lengths and non-standard widths can be manufactured on request.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

The minimum order quantity is 5 pieces per size. Stock sizes ship quickly, and custom or OEM production lead times are confirmed when you place your order.

What applications are 20M timing belts used for?

HTD 20M belts are used for heavy-duty industrial drives such as mining and quarrying conveyors and crushers, cement and steel rotary kiln and roller press drives, paper machine and printing press drives, textile machine drives, power plant fan and pump drives, and long-span bulk material conveyors.
